QUICK GUIDE TO RESTORING FILES USING DEPOSITIT
If you still have your computer with Depositit installed on it and need to restore files that you have lost or accidentally deleted or if you wish to do a test restore of some files (to check they are safe) then follow the instructions in PART A
If your computer has crashed or been stolen or you need to restore your files to a new machine for any reason - follow the instructions in PART B
PART A: Restoring to a computer which has Depositit installed on it
- Open the Depositit software by double clicking the Padlock icon on your desktop. (Alternatively, click Start > Programs > Depositit > Backup and Restore)
- Click on the 'Restore' tab and enter your password* when prompted.
- The left hand pane shows your backup definition/s.
- Click on the "+" next to the definition you need to restore from and a list of orange padlocks will reveal the dates of your backups.
- Left click on the date of the backup you wish to restore from and it will turn blue and you will notice a drive letter appear on the right hand pane.
- Click on the "+" next to the drive to start revealing your folders and files and keep clicking on the '+' signs until the folder/s or file/s that you wish to restore are found.
- Place a tick in the box next the folder/s or file/s that you wish to download and then select either 'original location' or 'new location' to restore to.
Tip! Selecting "original location" will restore data to the same area as where you backed it up from and will overwrite anything that's there. "New Location" will restore to a different area on your computer (i.e desktop).
You should select "New Location" when restoring to a new machine, as the original location may no longer exist on the replacement computer.
* If you cannot remember your password, you can reset this by going to the Login area on our website and clicking on the Lost Password section.
PART B: Restoring to a New Machine
- First download and set up Depositit on the new machine (see instructions below)
- When Depositit is set up on your new machine follow the instructions in PART A above.
Downloading Depositit on to a new machine
You can download the Depositit software onto your new machine from our Login Area
Tip! When you have installed Depositit onto your new machine and restored your information, you may need to create a new definition so your files are backed up every day. You may also wish to delete the original definition off our servers so your storage is not doubled.
For further information on restore, visit our Help Desk here.
Notes:
- Once backed up, your files can be restored to any machine that has Depositit installed on it.
- If you are restoring files onto a new machine, make sure you have all relevant programs installed (i.e you won't be able to read your Word document if you don't have MS Office installed, same applies for Sage, Outlook and other file types or databases you use).
- When restoring email files and/or some database files you may need to import them back into your program (refer to instructions from the specific program for assistance with this).
- When you download files from Depositit, you are restoring a copy. Depositit still holds the information on our servers, so you can restore again whenever required.
- If you are setting up Depositit on a new machine, any information you had backed up from the old machine will still remain stored on our servers. To delete old definitions, follow the instructions here
- You can only restore one definition at a time, do not try to restore multiple definitions at the same time!
