8 POINT GUIDE TO BACKING UP WITH DEPOSITIT
- Open the Depositit software by double clicking the "padlock" icon on your desktop.
- Click 'NEW' on the top left side of the software and enter a name for your backup definition, then click 'OK'.
- On the right hand pane you will see a list representing the drives on your computer. Click on the "triangle" by the side of the drive you wish to select (the hard drive is usually referred to as '/' ).
- All the folders within this drive will now be revealed.
- Once you have found the information you wish to backup, place a tick in the empty box next to the file or folder name. If you have chosen to backup a folder just put a tick next to this and all the files inside the folder will automatically be backed up. You will notice it changes from yellow to blue, which confirms this.
- If you do not wish to backup the entire folder, simply place a tick in the box alongside each sub-folder or file that you want to backup, and once again these will change from yellow or white to blue when selected.
- When you have finished selecting your information, go to the bottom of the screen to the 'schedule area' where you can choose what time and how often you would like the definition to run.
- When you are happy with what you have set up, go up to the top left side of the screen and click the 'SAVE' icon on the taskbar. Your definition is now confirmed and will run at the time you have set.
You can also click 'Backup Now' on the taskbar for the backup to run immediately.
To update any element of a definition (add or remove files, amend the time or frequency etc): Highlight it by left clicking on it > make the required changes > click SAVE.
Tips!
a. Selecting 'control' and clicking on a file or folder displays the size and approx length of backup time
b. The first backup takes the longest time; thereafter it should be very quick
c. Set up different definitions for different information (i.e set up one for emails, another for database, and another for documents - see instructions below).
d. You can create as many definitions as required.
Backing up Emails:
Depositit will backup your emails. You must create a separate definition to do this and follow our instructions here.
Note: You must reduce 'Backup Cycles' when backing up emails.
Backing up Databases:
Depositit will backup your databases. You must create a separate definition to do this and follow our instructions here.
Note: You must reduce 'Backup Cycles' when backing up databases.
Backing up Networks, Mapped drives or Servers:
Depositit can backup all of the above. You must follow our instructions here to set this up correctly.
Final Note:
After every backup Depositit sends a confirmation email. If everything is OK you receive a "Backup Successful" email. If we have not been able to backup a file/s you will receive a "WARNING BACKUP UNSUCCESSFUL" email.
If you receive a Backup Unsuccessful email, open it to check how many files are failing to backup as sometimes it may be just 1 file (all the others will be safe and OK). You can then check the Client Log (in your software) to see precisely which files are causing the problem.
